Small Composite Cylinders Make Excellent Actuators

Small Composite Actuator

Polygon's PolySlide® material is well suited for use in small pneumatic actuators. Sizes as low as 0.25 inch ID are possible all the way up to industrial-sized 30 inch IDs and larger.

The patent-pending bore surface of the PolySlide® cylinder improves seal wear by reducing friction. Metal cylinder surfaces are left microscopically rough even at high RA values due to the nature of the machining process.

The PolySlide® bore surface is microscopically round in nature because it is formed by a molding process. A wear resistant material incorporated into the bore surface further increases lifespan. Together, these features allow the seal to slide over the bore surface contour, minimizing interlocking friction.

These factors combine to produce an actuator which can withstand fast cycling, as high as 10 cycles/second. The low coefficient of friction reduces generated heat, allowing for rapid cycling combined with long seal life. Testing has confirmed over 20 million cycles with negligible seal wear, with over 200 million cycles believed to be possible.

PolySlide® cylinder barrel wall materials are approximately four times lighter than steel, weigh less than aluminum, and about the same as magnesium. Polygon Company invented the non gel-coated composite cylinder and is now an industry leader in their production, with over 250,000 finished cylinders produced annually.
